The application of VOC emission control equipment for the chemical industries requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of the customer's process and requirements, as well as having the ability to offer custom-solutions. Pro-Environmental has experience in finding solutions to support the chemical industries worldwide.

Robust regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) and afterburner technology are the core of our systems. Pro-Environmental designs and engineers systems to meet specific requirements, including energy-efficient treatment of dilute volatile organic compound (VOC) flows, demanding applications utilizing VOC energy for secondary process heat recovery or co-generation, and safe abatement of high LEL exhausts. Up stream and tail gas treatment systems for removal of particulate and hazardous components such as sulphurous or chlorinated hydrocarbons are available. Also offered are designs operating effectively on oxygen contents below 5%.

Nail-Polish Enamel Manufacturer
Situation
A large manufacturer of nail-polish enamel installed the original oxidizer more than 30 years ago. The facility operated with only a single shift, requiring frequent startups and shutdowns. This took a toll on the heat exchanger tubes and expansion joints. Costly repairs and frequent unscheduled shutdowns were becoming a larger problem.
Solution Provided
Installed a fluidized bed concentrator system to reduce operating costs, improve VOC destruction efficiency and improve system reliability. This translates into a savings of $250,000, in natural gas, in the first year.

EPA - Compliance
Testing was conducted a few weeks after the equipment was fully operational. The results showed that the destruction efficiency of the system was well over the guaranteed 98 percent. This technology allowed the customer to realize natural gas savings in excess of $250,000 during the first year of operation.

Chemical Processing
Situation
A major CPI facility was emitting a variety of VOCs and HAPS that varied in chemical composition, flow rate, oxygen content, and humidity. Characteristic concentration of combustibles exceeded the LFL (Lower Flammability Limit) 90% of the time.
Since the emissions were from several processes and vents, there was no predictability; therefore, the control device had to be able to respond automatically to all variations in process parameters.
Solution Provided
PEI provided a Direct Fired Oxidizer (DFO) equipped with multi-port burners and variable process blowers.
The process emissions were treated as the independent variable and were fed to the primary fuel port of the oxidizer burner. A second port was for natural gas, which would be required only when the process emissions did not provide enough combustibles to operate fuel-free.
A fresh-air blower automatically added outside air for dilution whenever the process emissions contained excessive concentrations of combustibles.
All of these dependent variables were controlled by a thermocouple package set to provide a constant temperature within the oxidizer, typically 1400 F to 1800 F.

EPA - Compliance
99%, or higher, control of VOCs and HAPS allowed the user to operate in compliance with all applicable regulations at the lowest possible operating cost.
